Swartkops River Map

Submitted by Nigel on February 16, 2010 – 22:315 Comments

Swartkops produces good fish all year round and the main species that you will be targeting is the Spotted Grunter. The river is full of bait and mud prawn can be pumped on almost every bank you park on. Modderspruit is one of the places where getting bait is easy. Grunter are caught through most of the river, but many of them are caught on the main stretch past Modderspruit and Amsterdamhoek towards the mouth where Garrick can also be targeted. You can fish by the train bridge and catch decent Grunter there as well. There is easy access to fishing at Red House from the side, but the fishing is not as successful as down river. There are several slipways through out swartkops where you can launch your boat easily. Tiger bay is the easiest place to launch the boat. There won’t often be a day where you won’t catch a fish and that makes Swartkops worth the trip.

I have found that using pencil and pilchart in the day work very well.I got a nice tiger of 4.85kg on pilchart and it was in the water for about an hour before the tiger picked it up.Work your banks with incoming tide and you will be lucky. When using pencil don’t go with to big sinker a 1/8oz will do the trick.

Well the natural baits that can be collected from the river banks always work. This would include mud prawn, sand prawn and blood worm. The guys also catch grunter at night with pilchard, but not my favourite way too fish. Top water lures work for the leeries. Alot of guys throw lead head jigs and catch kob, leerie and gernards. And drop shot also works
