Buffalo River Map
This under estimated river situated in the heart of East London produces an unbelievable variety and volume of fish, The regular species found in this river are Skipjack, Leervis, Shad, Cob and Ribbonfish.
Access is gained through the harbour to a launch site situated at the NSRI base, fishing is good from the pylons and upstream for a couple of kilometers, while there are no definite hotspots ,the area of second creek and green bank tend to produce the best results, tide does not seem to play a major role , but without doubt early morning and evening are prime time. You’ll be better off on a boat as the banks are steep with thick vegetation and not advised for the lone angler due to safety. The best time of year to fish this river is September through April.

hi guys just to add my bit to the naming debate. It certainly is Greenpoint and not Green Banks. Being from Buffalo Flats our main road through here is also called Greenpoint Road (after the geographical area in the river). It’s been like that since the mid sixties when Buffalo Flats was first built. I guess Green banks refer to the grassy patches on the banks of that paticular spot.
Hi Brent
I think you are right as NSRI has taken over the old slipway where public used to launch.
Hi Nigel. My recent enquiries ended with the result that the ol\nly place to lauch a boat on the Buffalo River is to use the slipway controlled by the Ski Boat Club – but the catch is that one is forced to join the club. The blokes at the club tell me that there is no other means of gaining access with my small boat. In days gone by, the slipway beloged to the minicipality and open to all. Your assistance will be appreciated.
Hi Eric I’ve heard a number of people refer to it as both Green Point and the Green Banks. Seems like both names are commonly used by anglers.
Sorry not GREEN BEND but “GREEN BANK”
Hi Nigel- just had a look at the map of the Buffalo River and noticed that the upper end is refered to GREEN BEND. Years ago when we fished the Buff and very offen, it was known as GREEN POINT,not only by us but by everybody. So when and why the name change?
